Question:

What is the difference between the indicative and subjunctive tenses?

Christina d.
Answer:

The indicative tenses refer to actions or statements that are perceived as fact. It is not one tense but instead a collection of various tenses. For example: Cecilia come la galleta. This statement uses the indicative present tense because it is a fact. There is no doubt in this statement. The subjunctive tenses refer to actions or statements that are based on wishes, desires, doubts, and situations were information is unknown. It is also used in commands. Like the indicative tenses, the subjunctive tenses are comprised of many distinct tenses. However, the subjunctive tenses are conjugated differently than their indicative counterparts. For example: Su mamá no quiere que Cecilia coma la galleta. This statement uses the subjunctive present tense of comer to illustrate a desire. Although Cecilia's mother does not want her to eat the cookie, it is not certain whether she did or not.

Question:

When is the correct time to use me and I?

Christina d.
Answer:

I refers to a first person singular pronoun; therefore, it is the subject of the sentence. For example: I went to the store. In this case, I must be used because it the subject of the sentence, the one performing the action. Me is an object pronoun. Instead me refers to the person that the action is being performed on. For example: Amanda brought me to the theater. In this case, me is used because I am the person is being brought, not the person completing the action.

Question:

In what order do you expand two binomials, for example (3x + 6) (5x +2)?

Christina d.
Answer:

Use the FOIL method, which represents First, Outside, Inside, Last. The first terms are the first terms of each grouping so in case 3x and 5x. Once multiplied together these terms give 5x^2. The outside terms are the first term of the first binomial and the last term of the second binomial. In this problem 3x times 2 gives us 6x. The inside terms are the second term of the first binomial and the first term of the second binomial. 6 times 5x gives us 30x. The last terms are the second terms of both the first and second binomials. 6 times 2 gives us 6. Once all these pairings have been multiplied, they must be added together to form the final answer. Therefore, the answer is 5x^2 + 30x + 6x + 6. However, this answer can be simplified further to 5x^2 + 36x+6.
