How would we go about trying to solve for unknown forces in a structure in a Statics or Mechanics 1 problem?

When we are looking at a structure, we will first look at how it connects to the surface. We will then determine if it is connected through a roller joint, a fixed joint, or a pinned joint. This will tell us what kind of reaction forces will need to be considered. Our next step is to find global equilibrium. This will allow us to find the forces of the reactions through a sum of forces in the x, y, and z directions and the moments about different axis. These equations will have to be used to find relationships between unknowns to solve for a few unknowns at a time. The best way to teach this problem is through a whiteboard method drawing out the forces for a student to follow and interactively asking them what they think is next and why and then correcting them when necessary.

How would I complete a complex integration by parts problem?

The first thing to do for any calculus problem you are learning is to read the question and think about what it is asking of you. If the question is about integration by parts, then we want the integration by parts formula. The formula is int(u*dv) = u*v - int(v*du). This formula is telling us to take the two major components of the integral and pick a u and a dv. Once we pick the u and dv then we need to find v by integrating dv and du by deriving u. Once we complete this then we will move on to the next step of calculating the integral of v*du. For a complex problem, you might have to do a few iterations of this formula and then look at the integral you are completing and see if it equals the original integral we set out to solve. Once it does, you add it to the left side and divide the right side by two and it will solve the complex integration by parts problem.

Would a light wave be considered a mechanical wave?

The first thing we need to do to determine this is to define what a mechanical and a light wave are. A mechanical wave is a wave form that requires a medium such as a solid, liquid, or gas to transmit energy. A light wave doesn't require a medium to transmit energy and it can do so through a vacuum. This tells us that a light wave is in fact not a mechanical wave, but it would be grouped with electromagnetic waves.
