Question:

In masonry construction problems, how does one calculate the amount of mortar that will need to be used in a wall of certain dimension, given the dimension of the brick and thickness of the mortar joint.

You always model the brick as a whole, however the mortar is only modeled on on the whole top and one side of the brick. This type of problem, if modeled incorrectly, will yield the wrong answer even though in ones mind it makes sense. It is just as important to understand the concepts as it is to be good at calculations.

Question:

The cost of living due to inflation within the last couple of years has gone up a certain percentage. In 2020 a gallon of milk cost \$2.00, in 2022 a gallon of milk prices in at \$3.80. What percentage of change happened within the dates listed above?

This type of problem may be solved in several different ways. My favorite is proportions so long as you stay consistent with the placement of the numbers, the answer is always a few steps away. 2.00/x = 3.80/100. Ultimately isolating your variable X you obtain 200/3.80=x yielding an answer of 52% rise in cost.
