(5) States as central actors: States (or countries/nation-states) are the most important structure in international relations
What were some of the causes of the Revolutionary War?
The Revolutionary War was caused primarily by an imperial crisis and the colonists' outrage over taxation without representation. Before the Revolutionary War, Great Britain had fought in the 7 Years' War, causing them to be in deep national debt. To reverse their situation, the King decided to tax the colonists. After being given large amounts of freedom to govern themselves how they liked, the sudden taxation by Great Britain sparked a rebellion amongst the colonists. Initially, the colonists did not wish to break away from Great Britain, but after the King's rejection of their plea to repeal numerous taxes, the colonists were pushed to declare independence.
What was the aim of the Congress of Vienna in 1815?

It was hoped that such a balancing of territories (and therefore power) would ensure peace.
