What characterizes the theory of Realism?
Realism is characterized by: (1) A belief in anarchy: An international system in which there is an absence of a global structure that makes sure everyone follows the rules. (2) A belief in selfishness: Each state serves its own interests (3) Power measured in material terms: At the end of the day, all that matters is military might (4) Balance of power: If state A attempts to become the most powerful in the international system, a group of other states will join together to make sure state A doesn't succeed. (5) States as central actors: States (or countries/nation-states) are the most important structure in international relations

What were some of the causes of the Revolutionary War?
The Revolutionary War was caused primarily by an imperial crisis and the colonists' outrage over taxation without representation. Before the Revolutionary War, Great Britain had fought in the 7 Years' War, causing them to be in deep national debt. To reverse their situation, the King decided to tax the colonists. After being given large amounts of freedom to govern themselves how they liked, the sudden taxation by Great Britain sparked a rebellion amongst the colonists. Initially, the colonists did not wish to break away from Great Britain, but after the King's rejection of their plea to repeal numerous taxes, the colonists were pushed to declare independence.

What was the aim of the Congress of Vienna in 1815?
The Congress of Vienna set out to decide the balance of power within European society. It sought to resize major powers within Europe so that they balanced each other out and no one country would be all-powerful within the system. It was hoped that such a balancing of territories (and therefore power) would ensure peace.
