Question:

I would like to integrate my Office apps with an online file storage tool. What is my best option?

Answer:

Microsoft OneDrive integrates beautifully with the Microsoft Office Suite. All you need is a Microsoft email address which you can get for free from Microsoft. Your Microsoft email address will include free access to OneDrive which provides online cloud file storage that you can access from your computer or any web browser. Your files are backed up and secure. You can access OneDrive from your online Microsoft email account by using the apps launcher in your email account (the icon looks a bit like a waffle) to navigate to OneDrive. You can create, upload, and download files right there online. The best way to use OneDrive is directly from your Microsoft applications. Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Locate the Sign In option in the top right, and sign in with your Microsoft email account. You are now connected to your OneDrive storage area. When you to go to File-Open or File-Save As, you will see OneDrive as an option to open and save your files.

Question:

I have a really long set of data that extends many rows down. As I scroll down, I lose sight of column headers which are important for me to know what the data is that I'm examining. How can I keep that information in my view as I scroll?

Answer:

Freeze Panes is a feature in Excel that allows the window to "freeze" an area of the screen, so that as you scroll down or across, the frozen area will remain visible. On both Windows and Mac, you can locate the Freeze Panes option under the View tab. You have three choices to make: 1. Freeze Top Row will keep Row 1 visible as you scroll down. 2. Freeze First Column will keep Column A visible as you scroll across. 3. Freeze Panes. This option should be used if you want to freeze more rows or columns than just the first OR if you want to freeze a combination of rows/columns. To make the Freeze Panes option work, you need to place your cursor in the cell where the TOP AND LEFT cell boundary will mark the boundaries for the freeze. For example, if I want to freeze rows 1-3 AND columns A and B, I would place my cursor in C4 and select Freeze Panes. It would freeze everything above row 4 and everything to the left of column C.

Question:

How do you help connect someone to the information they are seeking?

Answer:

Librarians are trained to conduct reference interviews. We use a series of careful and friendly questions to help make sure we are clear on what information is being sought, so we can dial in to the best resources to provide. The questions vary as we start to gather information. This short discussion helps us quickly determine how to best assist my customers/students in finding exactly what they are looking for.
