They are membrane-bound organelles that absorb cell waste, foreign bodies like viruses and bacteria, and assist the cell in apoptosis, which is cell death. They deposit cell waste on the outside of the cell membrane (a phospholipid bilayer) by merging their own membrane with the cell membrane and depositing waste on the outside.
