Question:

How can I successfully create a closing paragraph for my essay?

Answer:

Closing paragraphs are often the least emphasized part of an essay in writing courses, but they are arguably the most important part because. Closing paragraphs reemphasize everything you have said in your essay, allowing the reader to walk away feeling as though they actually processed the main points you have stated as opposed to accepting that the essay was good, but not organized enough to be memorable. My favorite way to write a closing essay is the following: go through the first and last sentence of each "body paragraph" and restate the main idea of each paragraph in a single sentence. Then, to wrap it all up, restate your thesis in a simplified way as the last sentence. This will serve as a nice summary of your essay while also allowing yourself one last shot to argue your unique take on the topic of the essay.

Question:

How can I complete a close reading of a text in order to have a successful discussion about the text in my next class?

Answer:

Close readings can be intimidating at first, but if you know how to do them, they can actually end up being a lot of fun! My favorite way to do close readings is to first skim the text (as opposed to reading it closely and in depth). By skimming a text, you will not only get an idea of what the work means to say, but you will also find yourself *actually* reading the sections that you are most interested in. After skimming, we can go back and closely read the entire article with a less blind approach.

Question:

Why are writing and grammar skills important if I am choosing to go into a career in STEM or business?

Answer:

Writing and communication skills are arguably the most important skill that one can have, no matter their intended career. The ability to write well shows people that you are an intelligent worker who knows how to communicate to others, including other employees and potential clients. By knowing how to properly format an important email, or by ensuring all of the grammar in your team's presentation to a client is correct, you will find yourself a valued member of whatever company, organization, or team you hope to make your career in.
