Question:

List and describe 3 differences between mitosis and meiosis. Explain why each is significant.

Justin F.
Answer:

A major difference between mitosis and meiosis has to do with the outcomes of the two processes. Mitosis results in two diploid daughter cells with identical genetic information and meiosis results in four haploid cells containing different genetic information. These different outcomes illustrate the difference in the purpose of the two processes meiosis is a process to enable sexual reproduction where two haploid cells come together to form a single diploid cell. Mitosis enables cellular proliferation allowing organisms to grow and repair.

Question:

From the literature, you learn fragments of antibodies containing only the antigen-binding fragment (Fab) are being researched for drug and nanoparticle targeting. What is a possible benefit to using only the Fab fragment?

Justin F.
Answer:

The Fc portion tells the body how to respond to the bound substance. The nanoparticle or drug will not be labeled for phagocytosis or removed without the Fc portion. This will allow the drug/NP to stay in the body longer. The Fab portion will still allow for specific binding of the drug/NP to the target. Together more prolonged circulation and specific binding may increase the efficacy of the drug/NP.
