Question:

If Sally works 5 hours on Monday and earns $12 each hour she works, how much did she make on Monday?

Danielle S.
Answer:

Every hour Sally works, she earns 12 dollars. This means that she will earn 12 dollars at 5 different times, one for each hour. This can be calculated by doing 12+12+12+12+12. Whenever we have situations like these, where the addition gets a bit long, we can use multiplication. If she earns $12 per hour, and she works 5 hours, we can do 5x12, which will be 60. Sally earned $60 on Monday.

Question:

If a parent is heterozygous for trait B and has a child with a parent that is homozygous dominant for the same trait, what is the probability that the child will be homozygous dominant for that trait.

Danielle S.
Answer:

This question requires the use of a Punnett square. Heterozygous means the parent is mixed, with one recessive allele and one dominant allele. Recessive alleles are represented by lower case letters, whereas dominant alleles are shown by capital letters. The homozygous parent will have two of the same alleles, with both being dominant in this case. The Punnett square would have the set up as follows. Bb (heterozygous) x BB (homozygous dominant) B b B B will cross to have BB, Bb, BB, Bb. Two of the four children will show homozygous dominant allele genetics, so that is half of the potential outcomes. Therefore, the probability that the child will be homozygous dominant is 1/2 or 50%.

Question:

Please find the equation of a line that is parallel to y=2x-4 and passes through the point (6,5).

Danielle S.
Answer:

When we talk about parallel and perpendicular lines, we must remember that parallel lines always have the same slopes and perpendicular lines have slopes that are called "opposite reciprocals," which means they are opposite signs and the fraction is flipped. (ex: 3/2 becomes -2/3) Here, we know that our m or our slope must be 2 since we need a parallel line. We'll follow the slope-intercept form to write the equation of y=mx+b, which we can then make y=2x+b knowing that 2 is our slope. We are also given a point of (6,5) so we can plug in y as 5 and x as 6. The steps will look like this: y=2x+b 5=2(6)+b 5=12+b --> now subtract 12 on both sides to isolate the variable b. Since 5-12 is -7, your b or y-intercept is -7. Your final equations is y=2x-7
