What are some examples of neo-colonialism across the African continent, and what impact has this had?
Foreign aid in Africa was and is often given with political motives. Particularly during the Cold War, foreign aid was given by Western powers to African nations that swore allegiance to a particular economic and political philosophy (i.e. socialism or capitalism) or to a particular nation. The result was that aid often went to corrupt dictators instead of people who needed help. Ultimately, this has led to political corruption and instability, lack of effective aid products, and trillions of dollars in misused aid funds. Neo-colonialism can also be seen in Western nation's interference in political conflict. For example, during the Biafran War/Nigerian Civil War, the British supported the Hausa military because the British government and oil companies operating out of Britain wanted to insure that oil trade between Nigeria and Britain continued. The British continued to support the Hausa despite increasing evidence that the Hausa military was using blockades to keep food from reaching Igbo civilians.
