About Shannon
I'm a grad student beginning my master's thesis in creative nonfiction writing at Columbia College Chicago. I aspire to work in some capacity with 1st year college students, which is what is most fulfilling to me. Beyond writing and reading often, I also enjoy TV/film and music. I'm also a nerdfighter (an online community started by John and Hank Green of the Vlogbrothers), so when I like something, there's no in between. I'm either indifferent, or I LOVE that thing, whatever the thing may be.
Teaching Experience
I've taught at Columbia during my time as a graduate student for two years. I'm also currently a TA for a first-year experience class at Columbia called Music and Media in Chicago. I've also briefly tutored foreign exchange students (middle school age) from South Korea for approximately a month (the length of their study abroad trip) during my undergraduate career. I TA for a 1-semester course of 200 students. In collaboration with the professor and 3 other GTAs, I grade 50 of those 200 students' work weekly. I also lead breakout sessions each week with 25 of those 50. During those sessions, I work with the students directly on their writing.

As a GSI, I operate within CCC's English Department teaching first-year composition courses. These courses are comprised of 18 students, and I work independently as the sole instructor of my own class each semester. I was trained in a graduate-level composition theory & praxis course in which we developed lesson plan ideas, teaching strategies, grading methods, a teaching philosophy, among other beneficial classroom tools.
