In balancing chemical equations, why can only the coefficients be changed and not the subscript?
When balancing a chemical equation, you cannot change the subscripts in the chemical formulas, because that would be changing the substances in the equation. When you change the coefficients, you're only changing the number of molecules of that particular substance.
