Most of the time one will here turbocharger and supercharger at the same time. Can you name what are the similarities between them and then importantly differentiate the same ?

For the first part of the question stating the similarities between Turbocharger and supercharger: 1. They both are attached to engine to produce more power (almost 40%-50% more power has been recorded) by increasing the amount of air through force induction in combustion chamber. 2. Both has chamber and turbine like structure to compress the air and induce in the engine though not the way they are powered and placed in the system. Coming to the second part of the question where we need to differentiate between them: 1. Turbocharger uses exhaust gas energy to rotate the turbine and compress the air while Supercharger is driven directly by engine through belt. 2. Turbocharger can go up to 150,000 rpm while supercharger around 50,000 rpm (rpm=rotation per minute). 3. Supercharger can deliver power instantaneously but one can feel lag before turbocharger delivers that is called "Turbo-Lag". 4. At higher rpm Turbocharger is more effective once it kicks in while supercharger is not as effective on higher rpm as it is on lower rpm. 5. Due to cost effective and economical factors turbochargers are widely used.
