Question:

What is the mechanism of action of norepinephrine compared to epinephrine?

Alex H.
Answer:

Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that is found in low levels in the blood and has both alpha and beta adrenergic effects. It causes both positive inotropy, positive chronotropy, and vasoconstriction. Epinephrine has similar effects, but is a hormone found in significantly higher levels in the blood.

Question:

How does pheochromocytoma manifest itself?

Alex H.
Answer:

Pheochromocytoma is a condition related to adrenal medulla production of catecholamines, primary epinephrine. This results in excess catecholamine prodcution/release, and can result in elevated blood pressure, tachycardia, dizziness, diaphoresis, oliguria, and can be life threatening without treatment. It is typically diagnosed via a 24hr VMA urine analysis, in which elevated levels indicate possible pheochromocytoma. One should also investigate for MEN (Multiple endocrine neoplasia), as this genetic aberrance is a fairly common cause of pheochromocytoma.

Question:

What factors determine the stress experienced by a composite filling?

Alex H.
Answer:

Typically the amount of stress is determined by examining the number of bonded/unbonded surfaces, where a higher ratio typically correlates with higher levels of internal stress imparted on the tooth.
