Question:

What are three study strategies that a visual learner can utilize to study a complex concept?

Kaitlin P.
Answer:

1. The student could use mind-mapping to draw out relationships between main ideas and fill in details to visualize connections. 2. The student could search for videos online that depict a process they could not otherwise see. 3. If the concept is not too abstract, the student could draw the actual process.

Question:

A sample is flagged for low sodium in a previously normal patient. What specimen integrity issue should you check the tube for, and what should you do to correct the result before releasing it?

Kaitlin P.
Answer:

This could be a case of pseudohyponatremia. The specimen should be checked for lipemia. If the specimen is lipemic, it should be ultracentrifuged to remove the excess lipid content and then rerun before results are released.

Question:

What is a missense mutation in DNA and what are the consequences?

Kaitlin P.
Answer:

A missense mutation is a change in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA that results in a different amino acid being inserted into the primary structure of the protein at the site of the mutation. Depending upon what amino acids are substituted, consequences can range from complete loss of protein function to minimal change in function.
