Subject: Study Skills
Explain the SQ3R method of reading.
The SQ3R method is a system of reading and questioning that helps learners study texts efficiently. The acronym stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. Before reading in depth, survey the text for important headings, images and quotations. This will give you a good idea of the main ideas in the text. After surveying, write questions to which you want to find answers. These act as your review questions later on as well. Then, read the text, recite important information and review the answers to your questions!
Subject: English as a Second Language
What is an idiom, and why are they important? Give an example.
An idiom is an expression that cannot be translated word for word into any other language - mostly because they usually have some connection a language or country's history or culture. Idioms are important because they show that a speaker has some cultural knowledge and can use it when talking with others. For example, when you say that someone is "over the hill" in English, it does not mean that they have walked over a hill; rather, it means that someone has gotten too old or has aged past their prime.
