About Sean

About Sean
Hello! My name is Sean and I have been a teacher since graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2011. I graduated with Honors and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I was a pre-med student and an anthropology minor as well. Since, I have taught 8th, 9th, and 5th grade math in high-need schools in Washington Heights, the South Bronx, and Brooklyn. I also have a Master's in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.

Teaching Experience

Teaching Experience
I have taught 5th, 8th, and 9th grade common-core aligned mathematics for the past five years. I have also tutored high school students in statistics. In my most recent year of teaching, my students outperformed the district average proficiency rate by 20% on the 2016 NY State Math Test. That same group of 86 students improved their math proficiency by 24% from 4th grade to 5th grade.

Work Experience

Work Experience
Uncommon Schools, Inc., Educator
2013 - 2016
I worked as a founding math teacher at an Uncommon charter school named Leadership Prep Canarsie Middle Academy. Major responsibilities included setting a positive culture of learning in my classroom, designing and implementing Common Core-aligned lessons, and analyzing data and adjusting instruction based on individual and class needs. Other responsibilities included running after-school, weekend, and lunchtime tutoring, keeping in constant contact with families, and leading enrichment programs for the students.
Blue Engine, Teaching Assistant and Team Coordinator
2011 - 2013
Blue Engine is a relatively young organization whose mission is to increase academic rigor and prepare students for post-secondary success. As a teaching assistant and team coordinator my job was to create a long term lesson calendar, individual lessons and materials, and data-driven small groups of students. I would teach these small groups of students during the school day as well as morning, lunch, and after-school tutoring sessions.
