What is your process of approaching a character?
In approaching a character, the first job is to read the script for enjoyment. This is so that you get a feel for the story you are about to tell and so you could fall in love with the script. After you read it the first time, you reread the script about two more times, taking note of your character and following his/her arch throughout the course of the play/movie. Lastly, it is important to find your character's objective and motivation so that you can develop the circumstances. This initial research will get you ready for the rehearsal process.
What is a modern example of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet?
West Side Story is a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet. Romeo & Juliet is a story about star-crossed lovers who live amongst feuding households. West Side Story sets a similar stage by presenting the star-crossed lovers as Tony and Maria who are on opposite sides of feuding gangs. The plot lines parallel each other all the way until the end. The major difference is that the leading lady dies in Romeo & Juliet and does not in West Side Story. However, an argument could be made that Maria's soul has died with the loss of her fated lover.
How has dance evolved over the years?
Dance is a unique art form that uses body movements to express a thought, feeling, concept, idea, or story. Dance has always been rooted in culture, whether it is the free tribal movements expressed through African jazz or the precise disciplined movements of French ballet. All forms of dance tend to mirror the history times. From the previous examples, African jazz was used to communicate to the afterlife while ballet was an aristocratic form of dance that appeased the monarchs. As time progressed, dance became commercialized. It still held fast to the traditional values but became a staple of arts entertainment. This is especially true of first world countries.
