Explain the Catholic Church’s understanding of pilgrimage.
The church’s understanding of pilgrimage is that of a religious practice, which therefore has specific requirements, such as religious symbols and rituals. The journey is often seen has religious due to the destination often being a religious site or the journey being a path taken by a religious figure. Furthermore, the church understands pilgrimage as a metaphor for itself and for its followers; a constant journey towards growth and a stronger relationship with God, where sinners are welcome to repent and learn new ways.

The Road (2006) by Cormac McCarthy, uses setting to convey an anti-materialistic idea, as the world, having had undergone an apocalypse, easily crumbles and falls into decay, especially the buildings, statues and other works of humans, leaving only human life behind.
