Choose a film in which a character has an abnormal psychological disorder and explain with evidence from the film how you know.
Paranoid schizophrenia is characterized by a breakdown in personality functioning, withdrawal from reality, emotional blunting and distortion, and disturbances in thought or behavior. Psychosis, or loss of touch with reality, is a big factor in schizophrenia and is seen through hallucinations and delusions. Hallucinations are experiences of perceiving things that are not present, such as seeing or feeling something that is not there. In the film, Shutter Island, Andrew Laeddis was out of touch from reality involving many delusions and hallucinations. He had delusions of grandeur, believing he was a US Marshal, delusions of persecution, believing the hospital was a conspiracy trapping him on the island, and delusions of guilt, believing he could have saved his children. He had vivid hallucinations, inventing people that did not exist: Edward Daniels, Rachel Solando, Chuck Aule, and events that did not happen: talking to a runaway doctor in a cave. Laeddis also suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, shown throughout the film as he re-experiences traumatic events from war and Dachau through vivid flashbacks and nightmares.
