Question:

How much influence do you think ascribed statuses have on outcomes and attainment in your life?

Xena P.
Answer:

Some aspects of my life that have been ascribed are my sex- being female, my ethnicity- Mexican American, the birth order- youngest, being a daughter, my language- English, some hereditary features such as my height, etc. Some aspects that have been achieved are my level of education- high school education and in the process of receiving my bachelors degree, level of status- due to my family status I grew up within the middle class, having friends, learning a second language-Spanish, and gaining a significant other. I think that ascribed status greatly impacts the outcomes and attainments in my life. Due to the fact that I am a woman I am at a disadvantage in my society. Women don't hold high value in my society. My ethnicity also plays a part in my role in society. Since I am a minority, I am at another disadvantage within society since it has many prejudices against minorities. Society places labels and groups on ethnicity, sex, gender, etc. Within achieved statuses there are more influences in the outcome my life. Such as education, and status. With an increase of education there is an increase of my chances to get a well paying job and gain a higher standard of wealth, as well as a higher income. I believe that there are significant changes within society, but we have still not moved past how some ascribed statuses affect a person's chances to having a better life. Women are still treated as less than men, as well as minorities. The sex of a person and gender does make a huge difference, in particular because society has a closed conception of what is normal or should be accepted. In many ways society has kept a closed mind to what should be accepted, which includes a person's gender. Society becomes closed at anything that is different. This in turn starts the prejudice against others.

Question:

Literary Analysis of what hope is in a chaotic world.

Xena P.
Answer:

Hope mean to have a positive outcome of what the situation may be. It can also be seen as a survival tool needed to keep going at life, believing that at the end of the road there is something good that will come of all the bad. I guess I would say that hope is a reasoning tool to help us comprehend that we go through hardships and suffering now so that later on we can bask in the good at the end. Hope is what drives us and keeps us motivated through any chaos, it promotes action to be taken and move forward to making changes to get out of the chaos. To be hopeful in a chaotic world to me is to keep mentally strong willed to change what is happening now, it is what keeps us going at the end of the day.
