When teaching reading to a kindergarten student, what should the main focus be?
When teaching reading to kindergarteners, the main focus should be on letter names and sounds and phonemic awareness. When students are able to identify the sounds and phonemes within a word, they will be able to move on to independently sounding out words.
What is the coordinating conjunction in the following sentence? Explain. Molly ate all of the cookies, so Paul had no cookies to eat.
The word "so" is the coordinating conjunction in the sentence, because there are two independent clauses - "Molly ate all of the cookies," and "Paul had no cookies to eat." The word "so" joins these two clauses, acting as the coordinating conjunction because it shows that the first clause caused the second to occur.
What is the best practice of using assessment to guide your instruction in the classroom?
During instruction, formative assessment should be consistently used. For example, have students fill out quick "exit slip" quizzes, or have them work on personal whiteboards so you can have a quick idea of who has mastered a topic and who needs additional support. Based on this, a teacher is able to adjust their instruction to either re-teach, challenge students, or group students based on need. Summative assessment should only be used to assess mastery of a topic.
