Sigmund Freud is considered the father of psychology. He is credited mainly for defining the three parts of the brain; the Id, the Ego, and the Super Ego. These three parts of the brain are credited with different parts of our psyche. The Id is responsible and controls our base instincts. The instincts to survive and procreate. Freud is also credited for defining our psycho sexual behavior. He stated that it was the Oedipus Complex that states that we look for someone to "mate" with that resembles closely to our opposite sex parent. Freud was the first to give a list of defense mechanisms that are inbred in us. These are: Repression, Denial, Projection, Displacement, Regression and Sublimation.
