Answer:

To titrate 100 mL of .01 M NaOH, the number of moles of OH- in solution must first be determined. .1 L * .01 M= .001 mol OH- HCl reacts with NaOH directly at a 1:1 ratio .001 mol OH- = needs .001 mol H+ .001 mol HCl / .1 M HCl = .01 L HCl = 10 mL

Question:

Based on your understanding of the structure of hemoglobin, why does hemoglobin binding affinity for oxygen decrease when in the presence of high amounts of 2,3-BPG?

Answer:

Hemoglobin has 4 structural subunits. Each subunit consists of a heme group and its associated protein environment. Each subunit can either exist in the T or "taught" state, which has a low affinity for oxygen, or the R state, which has a high affinity for oxygen. When 2,3-BPG binds to hemoglobin, it creates a conformational change which locks hemoglobin in the T state, or low oxygen affinity state.
