Hemoglobin has 4 structural subunits. Each subunit consists of a heme group and its associated protein environment. Each subunit can either exist in the T or "taught" state, which has a low affinity for oxygen, or the R state, which has a high affinity for oxygen. When 2,3-BPG binds to hemoglobin, it creates a conformational change which locks hemoglobin in the T state, or low oxygen affinity state.
