What is the "silver-bullet" of current redevelopment strategies? What issues can arise?
Many new developments continue to market themselves as mixed-use communities. This buzzword continues to attract a large amount of redevelopment money in the hopes that it will stave off growth of traditional suburban expansion. However there are several possible side-effects including insufficient parking allocations, over reliance on stable commercial ventures, and gentrification resulting in sky-rocketing property costs.
What impact did the Marshall Plan have on the 20th century?
The Marshall Plan was established in 1948 in an effort to expedite the rebuilding and industrialization of Western Europe following World War II. While the stated goal of policy was to help redevelop countries it had several additional benefits as the U.S. sought to rebuild global order. These included: strengthening and expanding the U.S. sphere of influence to European allies, creating a balance against would be hegemonic aspirations by the USSR, and further development of so called U.S. soft power. The confluence of these factors helped to promote a strong divide in Europe along Cold War lines.
