Question:

Within the first few years of the United States as a country, what are three issues dealing with international relations that the US had to address?

Zoey W.
Answer:

As a new country, the US had to determine how to best approach trade agreements, foreign debt, and civil unrest in European countries. As the US economy was dependent on trade, especially trade with England, it had to carefully develop trade agreements, even with a country it had so recently been at war with. In fighting the revolutionary war, the US borrowed significant amounts of money from European banks, and managing this debt was an important part of building a new country. Finally, during the revolutionary war, France provided assistance to the colonies with the agreement that the US would return the favor. However the French monarchy ended and if the US aligned with a France that was in the middle of a civil war, it would not be in the US’s best interests and could raise the possibility of a renewed conflict with England.

Question:

In Archaeology, how are the tree logs of an ancient building used to determine when the building was constructed?

Zoey W.
Answer:

Archaeologists use the method of Dendrochronology to determine the time-period for a structure. This method involves studying the patterns that a tree’s rings makes when it grows. When there is a lot of rain one year, the tree grows more and the rings are farther apart, compared to when there is less rain. Therefore, every time-period in a certain region has the same tree-ring pattern. Through comparing a tree’s pattern to other structures that have been dated, Archaeologists can determine the time period that a structure was built, sometimes within a year.
