Question:

What is the easiest fix a student can do to their writing?

Steven R.
Answer:

There are several easy mistakes that students can avoid when writing but the easiest has to be proofreading their work before turning in. Writing is a lot like talking. When you write an essay it needs to make sense when read aloud. When you are having a conversation with someone you don't just drop in random facts and statements or pronounce words wrong. Why would you do it in your writing? The easiest way to write better is to proofread your work before you turn it in. The main things students should look for when rereading their work is to look at their organization of the work and make sure everything that is related is grouped together and nothing sounds random. The simplest fix is to proofread for typos and other spelling errors. Usually the first draft of an essay will have at least a couple errors. My advice would to also read it out loud to someone or to yourself and see if it is understandable. flows nicely, and everything is spelled correctly.

Question:

What is a super cool Sociological Theory?

Steven R.
Answer:

The Looking Glass Self is a widely accepted theory. Charles Cooley came up with the idea that we as humans are unoriginal and create and alter ourselves through interactions throughout society. Essentially we are constantly changing based on every interaction we have, we steal things we like from other people and add them to ourselves and vice versa, disliking certain things and removing them from our immediate self. An example of this could be politicians running for office. There have been numerous politicians that run for office fighting strongly for one thing: "I believe dogs should not be allowed to be off their leash when outside." As time goes on however they learn that more people actually like their dogs off the leash and their self begins to change: "I think dogs should sometimes have the opportunity to be off the leash" This makes the people happy which makes the politician more likely to be voted for. Sometimes they may even completely change their entire belief about one subject because the other outcome is so well liked: "Dogs should never be leashed" Essentially the theory states that our behavior is created by the society we live in and the people within that society.

Literature

Question:

What is the most important skill one should have concerning Literature studies?

Steven R.
Answer:

Critical thinking. Students need to have the ability to think critically about literature to develop a greater understanding on what exactly the author is writing about. Reading and understanding what is written is only the first part of a students job, the other half of reading is having the ability to analyze what exactly the author meant: are certain things symbolic? Metaphoric? Is the author trying to create something for the readers within the story? Critical thinking allows the students to better understand the messages hidden within literature and the specific message the author is attempting to give the readers.
