How can you help my child become a better writer?
I believe that anyone can become a good writer. Some students just don't know where to begin! For composition, I love to start writers off with the very simple 4 Square Model. This model works with students on all levels, is very easy to learn, and can be adapted to remediate or accelerate students as needed. I like to start off with what kids know best; stories that matter to them personally. We then move outward to expand to other types of writing. During Writer's Workshop, I use the 6 Traits of Writing model to help students look at their own work critically. As I help students move through the writing process they will end with an organized, cohesive piece of work.
Subject: Basic Math
What is your approach to teaching children early mathematical concepts?
I believe it is crucial for young students to have a solid foundation in mathematical basics in order to set them up for future success in math. Manipulatives, visuals, interactive tools, and hands on activities are key to helping students master challenging concepts. This is especially important as students are now expected to not only be able to arrive at a correct answer, but also explain how they got there. My goal is to build on what a student already knows and help them develop a positive attitude about math in a developmentally appropriate way.
How could you improve my child's literacy skills online?
With 20 years of experience in teaching young children how to read and write, I have found that a balanced approach is best. During my small group and individual lessons, we focus on word attack skills, phonics, building vocabulary through visuals, interactive notebooks, and word study. For reading I use a combination of read aloud books, shared reading and high interest guided reading activities.
