Subject: Study Skills
How would you help young students use a textbook as a study aid?
Regardless of format, textbooks are organized in the same way. I would show students how to use the different features in the textbook to quickly locate information for assignments and tests. For example, the Table of contents, chapter summaries, and headings to are structures to highlight the most important information in the textbook. The glossary and index pinpoint important concepts and vocabulary words.
Subject: Library and Information Science
A student comes into the library asking for help selecting a topic for a classroom assignment. How would you help them?
I would find out the general subject area and instructions for the assignment and direct the student to the online catalog to find resources. I would work with the student to help find appropriate search terms and databases, then I would allow the student to explore the topic on their own. If they needed additional help locating resources I would provide assistance.
What kinds of reading materials would you provide in your classroom for native Spanish speakers learning English as a second language?
I would have a variety of materials in different subject areas geared towards my students' ability levels and interests. Books might include bilingual picture books, high interest/low reading level books, books in Spanish, and Spanish/English picture dictionaries. I would also have read-along audio books and videos with English subtitles. All the materials would be selected to motivate students to read in English so they can improve their comprehension and vocabulary skills.
