Questions
Subject: Writing
Why is it important to be able to write? How is writing unique to other forms of communication?
For some people writing is a way of processing the world. Its a form of expression. For others writing is a way of communicating. Regardless of the type of writing you need to do, putting words together in a cohesive, concise manner is important. Words are important because changing one word can change the meaning and when you're writing an email to the CEO of your company, you want to be sure that your intentions are clear. Writing is unique to other forms of communication because it is less forgiving. When you put something down on paper it becomes semi permanent. When you write something you are depending on the word choice to depict your tone. When you speak, your tone tells the other person the nature of what you're trying to say. Writing helps us organize our thoughts. We write speeches, essays, books, letters and all sorts of formats to help us distribute information and how that information is distributed is often times the difference between a professional and an amateur.
Subject: Film and Theater
How do film and theatre help us function in society? What can I learn from a drama class that will help me in a work place that has nothing to do with the arts?
This is my favorite question to answer. Theatre specifically teaches us social skills, time management, organization, team work, collaboration and helps with social anxiety and self expression. Theatre also helps with speech, public speaking and giving effective presentations. Film, is an art form that can be interpreted in so many different ways and as an art form its job is to inform us as a society on current, past and future issues in addition to being merely entertainment. Every choice made in film is deliberate. Film teaches us empathy, critical thinking and so much more.
Subject: English
English is a fascinating subject, it makes room for creativity, critical thinking and original ideas and thoughts. Most people struggle when it comes to writing essays. What is the best way to organize your ideas into a strong essay, that is both intriguing, well thought out, and follows the requirements of the assignment?
There isn't ONE way to write an essay, but there are standard elements of an essay that should be followed. These elements include special formatting (MLA etc) an introduction, a thesis statement, examples from the text and how those examples support your thesis. It's a standard outline, but learning how to use this outline can be difficult for some people, when it comes to organizing thoughts into a cohesive document. There is an art to writing a good essay; no matter what the requirements.
