Truncation is a method for phrasing your search terms to optimize results. The symbols used by databases may vary a bit, but here are some common ones: *, !, $, etc. These symbols act as wildcards. If, for example, you were searching for childhood illnesses, you could use truncation to encompass all forms of "child" and "illness" into one search term like this: child* illness*. This would instruct the database to include results for child, children, childhood, etc. as well as the plural for illness.
