Question:

Four students take a Statistics test. Their scores are 96, 90, 84, 76. Which of the following statements is/ are true? I. The mean is 90.  II. The mean is 86.5.  III. The median is 85.  IV. The median is 92.

Statement II is True. The mean is calculated as adding all of the observations and dividing by the number of observations. Here total number of observations are 4. Sum of all the observations is 346 Mean = 346 / 4 = 86.5 Steps to compute median are as follows: Arrange the observations in order from smallest to largest value. Here ordered observations are 76, 84, 90, 96. If there is an odd number of observations, the median is the middle value. If there is an even number of observations, the median is the average of the two middle values. Since there are 4 (i.e. even) observations, median is average of 84 & 90. Median is (84+90)/2 =87.
