Question:

How do I add to my sentence instead of starting a new one?

Answer:

We can add to sentences and make them more detailed by using conjunctions. A conjunction is a word that joins sentences together. Instead of saying: I went to the beach. I ate ice cream. We could say: I went to the beach AND I ate ice cream.

Question:

How do I in-text reference when writing a research essay?

Answer:

Referencing can be tricky and there are many websites that can aid in creating a citation. However, when referencing within your essay you must first be aware of which citation style you will be using, and stick to it! For example if I were to use Harvard referencing, I would use the authors last name and date that the article/book was published, then place this within brackets at the end of idea I had mentioned - (Name, Date). It is important that page numbers are added after quotes, and you reference any concepts, key ideas, theories etc. which you have gained from your research and therefore are mentioning in your essay.

Answer:

The Broken Windows Theory, proposed by Wilson and Kelling (1982), suggests that the visibility of crime, deviance and incivility within a neighbourhood increases the likelihood of subsequent occurrences of similar crimes - if it has happened before, it will happen again.
