Answer:

Depending on the level of the course, all History papers should be written using Chicago/Turabian citations. However, this can vary do to professor preferences, though you can expect to use Chicago, or MLA as an alternative.

Question:

In what ways was the Civil War not just about slavery?

Answer:

The American Civil War was not only a war about slavery, it was a social war between two different cultural ideas. The North was more progressive and less tied to the ideas of the past, while the South clung to their history as a patriarchal society. The North and the South had conflicting ideas about how the United States should be run. Westward expansion was another rift between the two, what states would be allowed into the United States, and what states would have slavery. Slavery was not the only catalyst for the Civil War as it is often portrayed in Middle Schools and High Schools.

Question:

How does literature affect perceptions of race, religion, culture, social standards, gender, etc.?

Answer:

Literature over time shows us the differences in perceptions during those times. The literature from different time periods are the products of the social constructs around them, so they either agree with the construct or challenge it. For example, Lord of the Flies, is considered a classic adolescent literature piece, but it is blatant in it's racism toward Native American people, a product of the time, since the same piece would not be written today.
