Question:

What is the general layout for a well-organized written work?

Jana M.
Answer:

A well-organized written work starts with a thesis. A thesis is the topic or argument of the work. Generally, the thesis can be found at the end of the first paragraph. The first paragraph begins very broad in scope and narrows down to the thesis statement. Following the first paragraph and thesis statement, supporting paragraphs are written addressing the point covered in the thesis. Generally, 3 supporting paragraphs is the minimum. The written work then ends with a conclusion paragraph. This paragraph begins by restating the thesis, and then becoming more broad in scope. Larger works will require more than simple paragraphs.

Question:

Why did absolute monarchs who believed in divine right feel threatened by Enlightenment thinkers who emphasized the belief in natural law?

Jana M.
Answer:

Absolute monarchs who believed that they were given divine right, or the God-given right to rule, felt threatened by the Enlightenment thinkers' ideas of natural law because they felt that natural law decreased their power to rule. Under the concepts of natural law, there were laws or rights that were automatically given to all human beings at birth and these rights could not be taken from anyone. Absolute monarchs believed that they alone had the right to rule, that the right was given to them by God, and that the people whom they ruled could not have the same rights as royalty. Natural law, therefore, threatened the idea of absolute rule, and was not supported by royalty.

Question:

What positive and negative impacts did Europeans have on the native populations in America?

Jana M.
Answer:

The arrival of Europeans in America brought about sweeping changes for the natives whom they encountered. Some of these changes were beneficial to the natives, such as improved weaponry and the introduction of new and varied food items. Other changes, however, overwhelmed the natives, such as the introduction of unfamiliar diseases to which the natives had no immunity. These unpleasant changes ultimately led to the decline in native populations in North America.
