Question:

What are the correct ways to use a semicolon?

Inactive
Micaela M.
Answer:

Semicolons can be used to separate two complete sentences that are not joined by a comma and conjunction combination. These two sentences should relate to each other. Semicolons are also used to separate items in a list when one or more of those items already contain commas in their phrasing.

Question:

Please explain the difference between the following literary devices: simile, metaphor, and analogy.

Answer:

A simile is a comparison between two different things using the words "like" or "as." An example of a simile would be "The moon shone on the smooth surface of the lake like a glinting silver coin." A metaphor is a phrase that describes something in terms that do not literally apply to it. Metaphor is a type of figurative speech. It is similar to a simile, but it does not use "like" or "as." An example of a metaphor would be "Her hair was a rat's nest when she first woke up." This phrase expresses how messy her hair was. An analogy is a comparison between things that are similar or of the same classification. An example of an analogy can be found in the 2001 movie "Josie and the Pussycats," wherein the manager of the band describes the three members as "Christina Aguilera times three." This works as an analogy because Josie and the Pussycats and Christina Aguilera are all female musicians.
