Fill in the blank with the appropriate form of "escuchar." Espero que Ricardo me _______.
Answer: escuche. In this sentence, you are HOPING that Ricardo will listen to you, but you aren't sure if he will. Words of desire (like querer que, desear que, esperar que) are a good sign that the verb after "que" will need to be subjunctive. Another example would be: Quiero que vengas. In this example I WANT you to come, but again, I don't know if you actually will or not.
Explain the Malthusian Dilemma.
The Malthusian Dilemma, named after Thomas Malthus, is the idea that we will never be enough produce enough food for the entire human population. This is because humans multiply geometrically (that is, exponentially) and growth of food production is linear. Therefore, the rate of population growth will continue to rise and rate at which our food production capabilities grow will stay the same--meaning that the gap between the two will get bigger and bigger. Although there are many other factors that have helped us produce more food and fewer people, this problem is still very relevant to worldwide food shortages and other global distribution problems.
Find two errors in the following sentence and explain why they are incorrect. Sometimes I lay in bed wondering what life would be like if I was someone else.
Error 1: usage of the word "lay." The verb "to lay" requires an object--for example, "I lay the book on the table." The correct word in the above sentence would be "lie." Error 2: usage of the word "was." In hypothetical cases, the correct phrase is if I WERE. "If I was" is generally only correct if talking about the past. (If you've ever taken a foreign language such as Spanish, you might recognize this as the subjunctive in English!)
