Question:

In the immune system, what is the difference between innate and adaptive immunity?

Answer:

Innate immunity is a generalized defense mechanism our bodies have against invaders, recognized via antigens, which are proteins on the invaders’ cell surface. Since innate immunity is nonspecific, in healthy individuals it’s always active. Meanwhile, adaptive immunity is a specific response to the invader/antigen itself. Since adaptive immunity is personalized to each antigen, it is more complex and can take a while for the body to create an immune cell specially designed to attack a particular antigen.
