Question:

What was the cause of the First Opium War?

Inactive
Anna N.
Answer:

The First Opium War was a conflict fought between Great Britain and Qing Dynasty between the years of 1839-1842. At the time, the Qing Dynasty had little interest in trading with the West, regarding European goods as being inferior. At the same time, there was huge demand for Chinese luxury goods in Europe. This created a huge trade imbalance. To counter this imbalance, Britain began growing opium in India, then controlled by the British during the Raj. The British East India company then illegally flooded China with opium, reversing the trade imbalance and causing whole-scale drug addiction across China. The Chinese government then seized these illegal opium stocks. Britain declared this an act of piracy and declared war.

Question:

How were the motivations of those who participated in the Boston Tea Party more complicated than as a protest against "taxation without representation"?

Inactive

Answer:

The primary reason a group of Bostonians dressed up as Native Americans and dumped the equivalent of two million dollars of tea in Boston Harbor is more complicated than has been previously presented in history textbooks. Primarily, the reason why these men did this was to protest the Tea Act of 1773. These men had been smuggling tea in the North American colonies and consistently undercutting the prices of the British East India Company. Then, crippled with debts from the Seven Years War, the British government gave the British East India Company a large tax break so that they could firmly establish a monopoly in the colonies. This would vastly cut into the profits of the American smugglers. The Boston Tea Party was less a protest against taxation than a tax cut.

Question:

Why did Lebensraum become a central ideological principle of the Nazis?

Inactive
Anna N.
Answer:

Hitler saw the Third Reich as lasting for 1000 years, the "thousand year Reich." Placing himself within the broader context of European and German history, he saw himself and the Germany of the Nazis as being the natural conclusion of a process that began with Charlemagne. However to fully embody this fascist ideal, Hitler believed he needed certain territories. This is the concept of Lebensraum. Lebensraum became the justification for Hitler's invasion of the lands to the east like Poland and Ukraine.
