How does writing become important beyond school?
After school, writing becomes important in a few ways. For one, writing is the first obstacle in earning professional opportunities. Most companies dismiss or accept applicants merely based on the formatting, grammar, spelling, and word choice on resumes or entry essays; they may never get to the "meat" of your writing. In this way, attractive, correct, and succinct writing will become more important than personality or work ethic in the initial sorting process. In addition, writing can be an important means for self expression or media presence after school. Today's society is driven by a digital voice. Therefore, writing on digital platforms has become essential for many in communicating and remaining part of important global conversations after school. It is crucial for students to leave school feeling confident in their writing so they can find much success and relevance in the real world.
Subject: Study Skills
Why are study skills essential for learning throughout a lifetime?
Study skills are a means to achieve learning permanence, and not just a way to pass the test. While many think of study skills as vehicles to get through school, study skills are actually ways of thinking that help professionals, artists, adventure-seekers, and more excel far beyond the status quo. Great students (speaking in reference to people who learn anywhere, anytime, not just in school) probably do not realize that they are studying regularly, but encounter new information and process it automatically through conversation, writing, creating, and eventually teaching others, so that the information never leaves them. Without prompting, those with strong study skills find success in their careers and personal relationships because they are generally excited by new challenges. Thus, study skills are essential for learning throughout a lifetime because inquisitive people make for better, more reliable company.
Subject: English as a Second Language
How does the English language differ from other languages around the world?
The English language has many exceptions to grammar rules, spelling or sound conventions, and conversational uses, which makes it difficult to learn as a second language. Whereas many speakers of other languages remain consistent in their policies and structures, new English speakers may be surprised to encounter so many correct ways of interpreting or saying the exact same thing. Such variety can be daunting, but ultimately freeing once mastered.
