Subject: R Programming

Question:

What are some advantages and disadvantages of R versus Python?

Inactive
Darwin F.
Answer:

R programming is notably geared towards sciences, visualization, and model building. There are a lot of packages in R for accomplishing very specific scientific tasks (such as regression analysis or data plotting). Furthermore, there is also more community support for using R than for Python. Python on the other hand is more flexible in software development and in creating your custom methods. Python also compares more favorably to other programming languages and may be easier to pick up if you are familiar with another language.

Question:

What is the sum of the integers from 1 to 100?

Inactive

Answer:

This famous problem can be solved by observing that 1 + 100 = 101, 2+99 = 101, 3+98 = 101 ... 50 + 51 = 101. The sum is then equal to 50 * 101, or 5050. The generalized formula for adding 1 to the number n is then 0.5 * n * n + 1

Question:

If you fill a glass with ice water and then the ice melts, will the water spill?

Inactive

Answer:

One rather uncommon property of water is that it is denser as a liquid than as a solid (hence why ice floats). When the ice melts into liquid water, it actually becomes denser and hence the level in the glass will actually drop.
