Subject: Music Theory
Is Music Theory necessary in world where machines and apps can create music for us without much thought on the part of the user?
Yes. Music Theory shows us how to think through music as a composer would, and helps us to predict what the music will do. It is a much more in depth process and allows us to be more creative than merely pressing buttons. Our creativity is hindered when we do not study the fundamentals of music.
Is music an essential subject all students across all countries should learn?
YES. Music enhances our ability to function as humans, and has been statistically proven to fire neurons in our brains that would not be firing otherwise. We learn to express ourselves in ways that we had no idea existed when we learn to play and perform music.
In the current climate with the global pandemic and most schools closed - is it possible that students will learn more and in different ways than we ever imagined?
Yes. I believe students are going to come back more empathetic to the plight of those around them, come back with more fervor and gratitude for the subject areas they are learning, and come back with an enhanced knowledge of what it feels like to be alone. Perhaps becoming better humans will be an outcome of our isolation.
