A person 100 meters from the base of a tree, observes that the angle between the ground and the top of the tree is 18 degrees. Estimate the height h of the tree to the nearest tenth of a meter.
With no diagram or picture to show the person, and a tree, this problem might be a little difficult to explain but I will try my best. A person is 100m away from a tree ( Imagine yourself 100m from a tree on a leveled surface). Now draw a straight line from you (point a) to the tree (point b). Under the line show that it is 100m. "The person then observes that the angle between the ground and the top of the tree is 18 degrees." So now you have two lines: 1. a straight line from you (a) to the tree (b) which is 100m away. 2. a line that moves up at an angle of 18 degrees from you (a) to the top of the tree (c). That leaves space between both lines which is the height of the tree (point b-c). By now, you should have noticed we have a triangle in which the height (b-c) of the triangle is unknown, the base (a-b) is 100m, the angle at point a is 18 degrees, and the distance from a point a to c is unknown as well. The question is asking us to find the height (h) of the tree. We know that h is from point b-c, which is directly opposite the angle 18 degrees. Now memorize this: SOH CAH TOA SOH means sin(theta) = opposite/hypothenus CAH means cosine(theta) = adjacent/ hypothenus TOA means tan(theta) = opposite/adjacent hypotenuse = the longest side of the triangle. In this equation, the hypotenuse is the distance from the person to the top of the tree. Opposite is the side directly opposite the angle. Here the side directly opposite the angle is the height of the tree. Adjacent is the base which is 100m Now, adjacent = 100m hypothenus = ? opposite = ? theta = 18 degrees To find Opposite ( height of tree), where a= 100 and theta = 18 again, SOH CAH TOA We use TOA, since we know the angle, a= 100 and O is what we are looking for. Tan (18) = o/a tan 18 = o/100 Remeber 18 degrees not radians 0.3249 = o/100 o = 100 * 0.3249 o= 32.49m To the nearest tenth= 32.5m.
Find the value of x in the following expression: 32^x+2 * 64^2 = 1
This is a simple indices question I put together. First things first, the (^) symbol in the equation is used online to represent raise to the power or an exponent. This question may look easy, but there are rules that must be obeyed. Looking at the equation 32^x+2 * 64^2 = 1, you will notice a pattern with the bases (32, 64, and 1). Recall the law of indices in which x^a * x^b = x^c. The law states that if all bases are equal, you cancel the bases and add up the exponents. So x^a * x^b = x^c becomes a + b = c. For the question above, you first have to make all the bases equal before the rules of indices can be applied. Look carefully, 32 = 2^5, 64= 2^6 and 1= 2^0. Any number raised to the power of 0 is equal to 1. Plugging these values into the equation: 2^5(x+2) * 2^6(2) = 2^0 Now, let us get rid of the brackets: 2^5x + 10 * 2^12 = 2^0 All bases are equal so no we can follow this law x^a * x^b = x^c = a + b = c 2^5x + 10 * 2^12 = 2^0 = 5x + 10 + 12 = 0 5x + 22 = 0 Now you have to move 22 to the other side of the equation to find the value of x. One thing to always remember is all number that crosses the (=) symbol will change from positive to negative or vice versa. In this case, 22 is positive (+22) 5x = -22 x = -22/5
