Questions

Subject: Writing

Question:

What are some strategies for getting started on writing a difficult paper?

Answer:

The most important thing is to start writing. I recommend that students begin by just writing a stream of consciousness response to the prompt. This pre-writing activity gets over the hurdle of starting the project and starts to show the student what they genuinely think about the topic. This can then transition into formulating a more formal outline and eventually writing the actual paper.

Question:

When studying for a short answer exam, what is one of the best strategies?

Answer:

If the student has sample questions in advance, they should practice writing answers to those questions. If not, the student should prepare their own practice questions and produce answers for those. Once the student has a bank of questions and answers, the student should go back and turn those answers into bullet points. Then the student can quickly go through those questions and answers until they are more or less memorized.

Subject: Philosophy

Question:

In terms of the self, physicalism is the view that the self is nothing above the physical components of the body. Dualism is the view that the self is distinct from the physical. According to Dualism, the self is a non-physical entity. Which of these two views do you find most plausible and why?

Answer:

Dualism is more compelling than physicalism because of the problem of consciousness. There is no scientific evidence that can prove that our self-awareness is produced merely by the collection of physical atoms composing the brain. In fact, the physical elements of the brain seem to be the wrong kind of thing to produce our ordinary consciousness. Thus, the source of consciousness must be non-physical. We cannot deny the reality of the physical world, thus Dualism is the more plausible theory.
