Subject: Writing

TutorMe
Question:

How do I get my work published?

Katie M.
Answer:

Let's start at the beginning! Do you want to be a contract writer? A freelancer? What kind of writing do you want to do? Once we choose which fits your goals best, I will help you study the publication to learn their writing style and craft the perfect pitch (known as a query in the journalism world) and find which editor we need to address it to. From there we will rinse and repeat until it becomes second nature and we fulfill your publication goals!

Question:

What is intersectionality? Why is it important?

Answer:

When we look at Gender Studies, it isn't only a study of women, but of all genders. And to understand gender, we need to understand the complexities and various background elements that come together to form gender identity. When we look at these various backgrounds that make up a person, we call it intersectionality. This is the space where educational background comes together with family history, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, socio-economic backgrounds, and many others -- it's how we form one whole person. When we look at someone's identity, it's the intersection between all of these elements. The practice of looking at everything when we identify someone is called intersectionality.

Subject: Communication

Question:

What is the difference between interpersonal and intrapersonal communications?

Answer:

Great question! They both sound and read-alike, but if we break them down we will see the differences. Inter-personal communication is between two people. We can think of it as the words are intertwined between the communicators. Intra-personal communication is when we communicate with ourselves. Intra- in Latin means "within," so we are using intra-personal communication to dive within. This is equally important to understand what you, yourself, need to know and communicate later to others.
