Freud was considered the father of psychoanalysis because of his approaches to treating mental illness. He is believed to be credited with the use of "talk therapy" and believed that our childhood has a great effect over the shaping of our individual personality. By analyzing what had occurred during an individual's childhood, Freud believed he could discern the cause of the mental illness (such as anxiety) that a patient was exhibiting.
