Question:

Which of the following statements is acceptable as a thesis statement for an argumentative essay? Justify your selection. 1. The Electoral College helps select the president of the United States per the United States Constitution. 2. The Electoral College, while prescribed by the United States Constitution as the method for selecting presidents of the United States, is an unfair system which violates the one-person, one-vote foundation of our republican form of government.

Answer:

The example that is an acceptable thesis statement for an argumentative essay is example number two. First of all, this is a statement, not a question. However, the statement is argumentative, and is one with which readers could agree or disagree.. It is also a statement that explains the purpose of the essay, yet also clearly defines the position of the writer, one that then must be defended with evidence, examples, and clear logic. The first example, while a statement, is a statement of fact, about which the readers cannot argue. It is a definitive statement, which is true and not debatable. In that regard, it is equivalent to stating that Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. That is a fact which cannot be argued. A thesis statement should provide the writer an opportunity to make a claim which can then be defended and debated. In other words, it is a claim which can be argued.

Answer:

The longest river in the world at 4132 miles long, the Nile River was and remains integral to the survival and success of Egypt. Because of its location in East Africa surrounded by the Sahara Desert, the climate is dry and arid. In such a climate, agriculture and farming, both subsistence and large-scale, are difficult. The Nile River provided relief from these conditions through its regular flooding. Not only did this provide the opportunity to irrigate crops, but because the flooding waters also deposited fertile soil and sediments on the land in the floodplain that helped fertilize the soil and make it fertile for agricultural production. Historians have called this silt deposit the Black Nile due to the dark color of this silt and sediment. In addition, the Nile River included rapids called "cataracts" which provided some protection from invasion. The more navigable parts of the river provided a means of travel and transportation. If not for the Nile, life in Egypt would have been a great deal more difficult, thus impeding the growth of an influential culture which contributed to the development of culture, architecture, arts, and other trends which influenced the forward trek of human development.

Question:

Many historians argue that one of the catalysts for the American Civil War was The Mexican-American War. How so? Do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

Because the Mexican-American War resulted in the Mexican Cession, which added newly claimed territory to the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, conflicts arose in Congress and among various groups in the United States over whether or not that new territory should be slave or free. The entrance of new states in to the Union threatened the balance of power in the US Senate and alarmed senators on both sides, particularly those from slave-holding states, that the scales of power would be tipped in one direction or the other. Southern slaveholders feared that if more free states entered the Union, the US Senate would become a hotbed of abolitionism and lead to US laws and policy that would restrict the growth of slavery and possible its eradication. As territories in the Mexican Cession began to apply for statehood, the debate intensified and political conflict began to give way to physical conflicts.
