Question:

One important concept to remember is the Order of Operations. How does the Order of Operations work?

Answer:

The Order of Operations is applied as follows. Perform the operations in the order below: P - Parenthesis E - Exponents M - Multiplication D - Division A - Addition S - Subtraction Many people use "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" to remember this order. You must be careful to remember that Multiplication and Division are performed at the same time working from left to right. Then Addition and Subtraction are performed at the same time working from left to right. Many people forget this and do all the Multiplication and then all the Division or all of the Addition and then all the Subtraction. If you do that, your answer could be wrong. Also, if you have parenthesis inside of brackets or multiple brackets, you will start with the groupings furthest inside and work your way out solving each grouping using the Order of Operations for each group until all parenthesis and brackets have been eliminated. Work from the inside out.
