What is the origin of Hochdeutsch (standard German)
Hochdeutsch is basically the language that Martin used in his translation of the bible from Latin into vernacular. There was (and still is) many various dialects, but the language that Luther used became first the standard for written German, and has since then displaced more and more of the other German dialects. Switzerland remains somewhat unique in the German-speaking world in the fact that the locals still use predominantly their own varied dialects for every day conversations but use the Hochdeutsch for written communication and for many official functions (university teaching, administrative procedures, etc.)
What is the origin of the French language?
French comes from Latin and from the language primarily spoken in the Paris region in the high middle ages, the “langue d’oïl”, as opposed to the langue d’oc spoken in the Provence region. The language has been slowly adopted by the whole country due to the high centralization imposed by the French kings and then the République, and has also been adopted by regions of Switzerland, and Belgium, and by many African countries who were colonized by either France or Belgium.

What are some key similarities between the US and Switzerland
Both countries are federation of states that gained their independence from monarchical states (England for the US, Austria for Switzerland) through wars of independence. Both countries have became military superpowers. Both countries have a very varied citizenry - three different national languages in Switzerland, Immigrants from more than 100 countries in Switzerland. And both countries are still organized as federations with significant state rights.
