Question:

How can the characters of Desdemona and Ophelia be connected by way of motivations and their untimely endings?

Gina E.
Answer:

Ophelia is quite interesting because at the root of it all she is merely a teenager who wants her boyfriend to love her as much as she loves him. Hamlet was very tortured young man and because of the mixed signals he sent her it caused a lot of tragedy in her life and his. She gets a lot of advice from her father Polonius and brother Laertes but she does not take it into account simply because she loves him so much. While Hamlet is only putting on an act of being mad, he is very convincing and that does drive her mad herself and leads to her suicide. Desdemona like Ophelia loved her husband Othello very much and got mixed up with the wrong people. She thought that she could trust Iago being that he was a close friend of her husbands and his second in command but she was wrong to that. He was a jealous man and was creating various plots behinds Othello’s back to cause heart ache in his life to bring him down. Her death was caused by her own husband by way of rumors that she was having an affair with another man. These were rumors being spread by Iago and again Othello should not have put his trust in him either. Ophelia and Desdemona as connected because their lives were cut short because trust was put in the wrong people. Hamlet was the one she thought she could trust and he betrayed her by putting on this whole act of being mad but not letting her in on it. Had she known maybe she would have lived. Hamlet did need everyone to believe his act for his plan of revenge to work but it still cost poor Ophelia her life. Desdemona’s life was cut short because she trusted Iago and because her husband trusted him as well. They should have merely put their trust in one another and all that heartache may have never occurred. In closing, Ophelia and Desdemona were both women who loved their significant others very much and were betrayed by them because of the influence of outside sources.

Question:

What is dystopian literature and how it is connected to the themes and ideas being presented in 1984 by George Orwell?

Gina E.
Answer:

Dystopian literature is a complex genre and can involve many themes and ideas. With this specific novel in mind it involves a future with everyone being watched by the government and being controlled by them. This is what this genre of literature does best it capitalizes on social and political aspects of society and magnifies them. This novel is putting forth paranoia and control. It was written quite some time ago and while we are not complexly controlled by the government a lot of the ideas Orwell set out in the novel is in some form true in current times. While we are not being watched through our television with the invention of the internet and various search engines this does happen in some form. When we enter said search engines and they have suggestions for things we may enjoy based on what we were previously exploring that is in some form watching us. This does not give us any reason to be alarmed because this is merely making our experience simpler and more enjoyable. In closing, dystopian literature is complex and does cause us to question various aspects of the society in which we live but it is merely meant for enjoyment as most are and should not be taken as serious as it may seem.
